Chinese Lanterns

Dallas Zoo 2019
Dallas, TX

The Process

Crystal Clear Imaging (CCI) has been wanting to introduce domestically made Chinese Lanterns for zoos around the country. Our first client, Dallas Zoo worked with us in wanting to bring a group of animals to life. I was hired by CCI to design and manage this project. I spent weeks designing, building, and fabricating multiple lanterns. This process was very new to me, so there came a learning curve for myself and for the company.

3D modeling, steel MIG welding, pre-press production, lighting, and sewing were involved.

I personally did not build the penguin structures, but I worked with local seamstresses and lighting professionals to bring the sculptures to life. I did, however, design and weld other structures that are still in the production phase. Once fabric patterns were made, I placed art onto templates for pre-press production.

In order for me to really learn the steps in this process, I took part in every step of production.

To critique my own work, I know these lanterns could have been stronger. I believe they were a good first attempt for our company. I truly believe that once a structured plan and working with the correct professionals, designing Chinese lanterns would be in high demand.

Ordering from China and Asain countries are costing zoo's thousands of dollars for products that do not last long. This difference between our chinese lanterns and traditional chinese lanterns is that we create a pattern with power stretch fabric, which last longer than hand painted paper wrap. For paying a large amount of money, zoo's should be able to keep lanterns outdoors for a long period of time.

Chinese lanterns have great potential in the United States, and I look forward to using these skill sets for the next step in my career.
